Florida Agri-Women (FAW) celebrated its 5th annual meeting and conference on August 1st - 3rd, 2008,at the Clarion Inn and Conference Center in Gainesville, Florida. Thanks to our Host Sponsor, Florida Sugar Cane Growers Co-op along with many other generous sponsors, over 30 people were able to participate in this year's event.
The general membership meeting and events on Saturday gave new and existing members an opportunity to learn more about FAW and agriculture in Florida. FAW had the pleasure of hosting 8 guest speakers at the weekend's events. These speakers educated our group on the farm bill, food safety, community supported agriculture, the USDA, Farm Service Agency and many more topics important to our industry. Also, we were honored to have Marcie Williams, President of American Agri-Women, as a guest speaker at this year's annual meeting. We'd like to thank these guest speakers for their time and for educating our members on these important topics within our industry.
In addition to the membership meeting, .......
the following officers were elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the 2008-2009 year: President, Jamie Foster PhD; Vice-President, Mary Maddox; Secretary, Debbie Brady; Treasurer, Regina Thomas. In addition, the following members were elected to serve as directors at large: Kelly Vineyard PhD, Sonia Tighe, and Angelina Toomey. Congratulations to the newly elected board of directors! FAW would like to thank last year's Board of Directors for their hard work and dedication.
During the Founder's Day Dinner Saturday evening, Tracy Duda-Chapman served as our keynote speaker and assisted us in honoring Dr. Lori Warren, Assistant Professor of Equine Science at the University of Florida, as our 2008 Founder's Day Award Recipient. One of the many highlights of the dinner was Dr. Warren's acceptance speech. FAW's Founder's Award is the highest award the state organization gives annually. Dr. Warren's dedication to and promotion of Florida agriculture has made her an outstanding role model for women in agriculture.
The 2007-2008 Annual Meeting Committee deserves a big thank you. Without the hard work of the members of this committee, the annual meeting would not have been as successful.
Stay tuned for more information on the 2009 Annual Meeting. For those who were unable to attend this year's annual meeting, you missed a wonderful weekend full of fun and fellowship with your fellow women in agriculture. We hope to see you all next year.
